When and Where?
The timing of any visit, as well as the selected destination, impacts directly on the actual experience. Once we are made aware of what you want to see, and when you want to travel, our experts at KKT can advise and guide you accordingly. It is always worth remembering that each season (time of the year) has its pros and cons.
In the ”green season” (November/May) you can expect better availability and safari rates, excellent photography conditions and fewer crowds.
In the “brown season” ( June/October) cooler, drier conditions provide excellent game viewing conditions but a greater number of visitors

Top Tanzania Destinations
Northern Tanzania Destinations
The Northern Parks of Tanzania can best be described as “Parks for All Seasons”. The “Great Wildebeest Migration” is by no means a singular event, as it is often mistakenly portrayed. The animals make an annual circuit around the great Serengeti National Park and cross the Mara River into Kenya, before returning to Tanzania, always following the precipitation and the new grass. This migration of well over 1.5 million animals, predominantly Wildebeest, Zebra, and Thompson gazelles, is categorized by the time of the year, and provides two or even three very different and contrasting spectacles –
Serengeti – Southern Migration (March/April) Green Season
The herds, with the female wildebeest heavily pregnant, have finally reached the short grass plains of Ndutu and an abundance of food and water. It is during this period that over 500,000 calves are born. This “beginning of life” attracts the guaranteed presence of predators which round out the spectacle in the shape of nature’s “check and balance”
Things to do
- Game Viewing from the 4WD vehicle.
- Balloon Safari
- Walking Safari
Serengeti – Mid Migration (May/June/July) Green Season
As the short rains recede and the grass becomes less nourishing, the herds with their new off-spring move in a westerly direction and pass from the short grass plains to the longer grass plains of the Seronera area of the Central Serengeti. The calves are now stronger, but the cycle of life continues undiminished with the constant battle between herbivore and the waiting predators in a never ending scenario.
Things to do
- Game Viewing from the 4WD vehicle.
- Balloon Safari
- Walking Safari
Serengeti – Northern Migration (August/September) Brown Season
Again, as the nutrition recedes with the dry season, the herds turn to the northwest with the promise of better grazing. The focus of the herds is now again on procreation and display an urgency as they approach the crossing of the Grumeti and then the Mara Rivers. Although well documented erroneously as the “Great Migration”, the spectacle of these crossings, (herbivores battling crocodiles as well as the land predators) can never be diminished, but in reality, is only another chapter of the contrasting spectacles in nature’s “ Greatest Show on Earth”

Western Tanzania Destinations
The Western Parks of Tanzania, clinging to the shores of Lake Tanganyika offers a unique diversity from the rest of Tanzania. The mountainous terrain dropping down onto sandy beaches along the shore of Lake Tanganyika can undoubtedly be described as “Primate Heaven” This spectacular environment hosts an array of primates of all sorts – red colobus, blue, redtail, and vervet monkeys, olive baboons, and last but not least chimpanzees. This is one of the last places in the world to meet our closest relatives, all closeup and personal, as they go about their daily routines. The experience is not to be missed.
Gombe National Park – (All year round- best May/October) Green Season
This small national park of 52 sq.m has since 1960 been the centre of chimp research by the famous scientist Dr.Jane Goodall. Located only one hour north by boat trip from Kigoma, visitors by medium of guided hikes with park rangers, are easily able to observe the chimps interacting in the closest of proximities. Historical references and memorabilia from the early years of research complete the picture.
Things to do
- Chimp Tracking and Viewing
- Hiking & Trekking
Mahale Mountains National Park – (All year round-best May/October) Green Season
For many seasoned travelers, the remoteness and beauty of its location makes “Mahale Mountains” one of the most spectacular locations in Africa. The fact that the forest supports about 1000 chimpanzees and many other species, only adds to the overall attraction of such a special location. Visitors ascend from their lakeside accommodation through a network of forest trails, to spend time with and observe the habituated chimps in their natural habitat, before returning back to the lakeside to cool off and relax. Cultural trips to nearby lakeside communities are also possible.

Southern Tanzania Destinations
The Southern Parks of Tanzania evokes many superlatives. Wild, enormous, remote, amazing diversity of landscapes and habitats, sand and perennial rivers, swamps and oxbow lakes. Also, within this zone is an area of overlap of the Eastern and Southern African Wildlife Zones which means that it is not uncommon to encounter varieties of wildlife encompassing the two zones. It can be said that the Southern Parks gives an oversized indulgence of all the senses, with the areas of parks the size of small countries with a remoteness such that you feel that your only companion is mother nature. Despite the remoteness, access by air has become the norm, and even though infrastructure is not as well developed as in the Northern Parks, all levels of accommodation are readily available. A swing through the Southern Parks is a must for the discerning traveller.
Nyerere National Park – Best June/November ( Brown Season)
A 30000 sq.m area which is known today as the Nyerere National Park was separated from the former “World Heritage” Selous Game Reserve in 2019, subsequently becoming the second largest National Park in all of Africa.

Flowing through the Northern part of the park, the Rufiji River forms a series of oxbow lakes fringed by exotic palm groves which in the dry season, provides a magnet for all forms of wildlife and the basis for “great” game viewing. Extensive savannahs, and woodlands with a sprinkling of baobabs characterize the hinterland. Nyerere provides unique ways of game viewing in comparison to other Tanzanian Parks. Apart from the “boat safaris” on the river and lakes, visitors can enjoy an off-road privilege to allow them to get much closer but still keep a respectful distance from the wildlife. This network of small informal tracks within such habitats has enhanced the game viewing experience without seemingly any negative effect on the animals. Apart from the regular big game, Nyerere hosts wildlife such as African hunting dogs, sable and roan antelope, greater and lesser kudu, and the highest number of bird species in Tanzania. Take the opportunity to visit, you will be enthralled.

Ruaha National Park – Best June/November (Brown Season)
“Wildest Africa” with extremes of everything, temperature, weather, habitat and wildlife, is one of the best ways to describe Ruaha National Park.

Seasonal rivers, mountains, plains, kopjes, dense woodland, and savannah are packed into this park of 20226 sqm. The seasonal or sand rivers, (the Great Ruaha River is the only perennial river) are lined with various groves of palms, figs, and sausage trees and during the mid-day heat in the dry season provide shelter for the wildlife. You can see elephants digging in the sand for water with other wildlife waiting in turn to quench their thirst. The fact that this seemingly inhospitable area hosts, apart from the big game, some of the most varied and unusual species of animals and birds, speaks volumes for the subtly of mother nature. African hunting dogs are a regular in certain parts of the park as are the lesser known and observed sable and roan antelopes. The most accessible parts of the park for visitors are in the south-east, in the region of the Great Ruaha River. Accommodation levels vary from luxury to camping. Don’t miss an opportunity to see Africa at its harshest but at the same time its most rewarding.

Situated only 80 Km from the mainland the islands of the explorers, adventurers and romantics are easily reached by ferry and international and domestic flights from all parts of the mainland.
